Maniben.com is a woman’s journey which seeks to discover whether individuality, culture, values can withstand the pressure of an ever changing competitive world. A journey from Bhuleshwar to Malabar Hill which brings with it new dreams, new ambitions, and retains hope in humanity.
The show revolves around the daily life of a middle class woman who lives in one of the many chawls in Mumbai with her husband and children. Being in the business of diamonds and with his rising riches, her husband manages to bring him and his family out of the chawl to an up-market area of Mumbai- Mahabar Hills. Smriti Irani (who plays the role of his wife) although very happy with the recent turn of events, is now faced with an impending dilemma. Balancing her middle class values and inhibitions she has to also portray herself with her neighbours as an equally snobbish and fashionable woman which is typical of the rich society women who live in the area. The series showcases her transformation from a ‘behenji’ to an ultra modern woman which no doubt is filled with a lot of funny incidents.

Divine Intervention!

Such things would rarely happen on a shooting set but it seems like the Gods literally chose Maniben.com to shower blessings in the most unique way.

The incident occurred during the shoots of Maniben.com, Maniben(Smriti Irani) was required to cut vegetables. In between the shot, as Maniben went about saying her dialogues and cutting brinjals, one such brinjal astounded everyone on the set. It actually had a neatly embedded design of "OM" clearly visible inside it!! This created a furor on the sets and everyone wanted to have a peek at this most amazing occurrence. OM is considered as the most holy and auspicious symbol among Hindus and this superbly engraved brinjal just proved that Maniben.com just received some "Divine Intervention".

Maniben calling

Smriti Irani gets chatting on her new show Maniben.com and the trend of packaging social causes

What is your new show Maniben.com all about?

It is the story of a middle-class woman Maniben from Saurashtra who gets married to a diamond polisher in Mumbai. Initially, they stay in Bhuleshwar. Gradually, her husband becomes a diamond merchant and shifts his residence to the plush area of Peddar Road. As he climbs the ladder of success, she gets left behind. But Maniben believes that money should not make a difference. She believes in her values and refuses to change her ideology or sense of dressing to suit the new milieu. Her motto is jiyo aur jeene do and that’s what the serial is all about.

Why did you choose this particular subject?

It was my first play and it was a huge hit in theatre circles. I thought it was a good concept to be translated into a serial. The original concept is Imtiaz Patel’s while the episodic ideations have been done by yours truly. We have introduced more characters in the serial. The best thing about it is, it has no canned laughter. These days demeaning celebrities and raising a few laughs is deemed as comedy. Maniben.com has the flavour of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s films, his kind of humour.

Viewers still remember you as the strong but self-sacrificing Tulsi. How will they connect with the fun-loving Maniben?

My art is about being an actor and the audience has accepted me in every role, whether it was B.R. Chopra’s Ramayan aired on Zee, Kallat Kalet, a comedy show on Doordarshan, a talk-show Kuch Dil Se on SAB TV or recently Viruddh. Tulsi and Kyunki Bhi Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi were like Sholay in my career and I don’t think they can be replicated. I have always had a good sense of humour but people will be realising it only now.

Though you saw success as an actress, your productions Viruddh and Waaris, despite being acclaimed, have not been chart-toppers.
I firmly believe that good content has no co-relation to TRPs. As a maker, you have to decide if you want to make fluff for the sake of TRPs or do something creatively different.

But haven’t serials like Balika Vadhu and Bidaai changed the viewing pattern.

I don’t think so. If you look closely, these serials are in the same mould as the saas-bahu ones albeit re-packaged with social causes. They are beautified with the same ribbons. The difference is that the heroines are younger. The day I see serials like New Delhi Times, Lifeline or Udaan being made, I’ll say the creativies on small-screen have changed. Till then, let’s be happy with our illusions.

Smriti and Sudha together in Maniben.com

The very popular pairing of Smriti Irani and Sudha Shivpuri of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi is back together with SAB TV's upcoming show, Maniben.com

Talking about her character in the show, Baa aka Sudha Shivpuri says "I play the role of Dadi who is the neighbor of Maniben (Smriti Irani). I have a family, but am unhappy as I am being harassed by my daughter-in-law. This is when Maniben enters the colony and helps me".

On working with Smriti again, Sudha says "I am very happy that I have got a chance to work with Smriti again. The day I shot for the promo of this show, we really had fun together. It was a bike scene with Maniben and it was great fun".

Smriti Irani also echoed the same sentiment in her reply to our text message and said, "It is always nice to work with co-stars who have been a part of my life for a long time. Sudhaji obviously holds a special place in my heart due to our long standing association. I always look forward to meeting her on sets".

Well, watch out as this popular combination of Smriti and Sudha are going to strike again from 8th June on SABTV's new show, Maniben.com
